What is i3X?

The Industrial Information Interoperability eXchange (i3X) is an open specification for browsing, reading, writing, and subscribing to industrial data through a consistent, vendor-agnostic, web-native interface. Developed by a working group of industry leaders assembled by CESMII, including HighByte CTO Aron Semle, i3X defines a strongly typed, discoverable, and IT-friendly standard for how enterprise systems interact with the factory floor. Think of i3X as the API for the factory that gives modern, web-based applications a predictable way to work with operational data.

What problem does i3X solve?

Manufacturing software stacks are fragmented. A typical facility runs historians, MES, quality systems, and maintenance tools from different vendors, each with its own proprietary API. This forces application developers to write custom integrations for every platform combination, drives up cost, and locks applications to specific backends.

i3X defines a single, stable API surface so an application written against it can run on any compliant solution without modification. For manufacturers, that means faster time to value from new applications, lower integration cost, and a portable software stack that does not have to be rebuilt every time a system changes.

The Intelligence Hub handles the routing and translation underneath, so every consuming application gets the access pattern it needs without integrating against each underlying system.

i3X and Microsoft AI Foundry

See how HighByte Intelligence Hub can be used to model a pharma production plant and expose that data over i3X to Microsoft Foundry. In this demo, Aron Semle creates an AI agent in Foundry and connects the agent to the i3X Server available in HighByte Intelligence Hub using only the OpenAPI specification for i3X. With very little configuration, the agent can browse the plant hierarchy, read real-time batch data from individual reactors, pull historical data, and explore model relationships.
