Expose contextualized industrial data through the i3X standard. Browse, read, write, and subscribe to modeled data in HighByte Intelligence Hub using a vendor-agnostic API.
The Industrial Information Interoperability eXchange (i3X) is an open specification for browsing, reading, writing, and subscribing to industrial data through a consistent, vendor-agnostic, web-native interface. Developed by a working group of industry leaders assembled by CESMII, including HighByte CTO Aron Semle, i3X defines a strongly typed, discoverable, and IT-friendly standard for how enterprise systems interact with the factory floor. Think of i3X as the API for the factory that gives modern, web-based applications a predictable way to work with operational data.
Manufacturing software stacks are fragmented. A typical facility runs historians, MES, quality systems, and maintenance tools from different vendors, each with its own proprietary API. This forces application developers to write custom integrations for every platform combination, drives up cost, and locks applications to specific backends.
i3X defines a single, stable API surface so an application written against it can run on any compliant solution without modification. For manufacturers, that means faster time to value from new applications, lower integration cost, and a portable software stack that does not have to be rebuilt every time a system changes.
Most manufacturing applications are built for one site and one stack, which is why digital initiatives stall when it is time to roll them out. i3X breaks that pattern. Build your application once against the API and deploy it across every site that supports the standard, even when the underlying systems differ from plant to plant. The application layer stays portable while the Intelligence Hub handles whatever sits beneath it.
Traditional industrial protocols move data, but they do not describe it. With i3X, applications can browse the full namespace, inspect the schema of any model, and understand the shape of the data before requesting a single value. From that same interface, they can read current values, subscribe to live changes, query history from connected historians and time-series databases, and write back to source systems. The Intelligence Hub handles the routing and translation underneath, so every consuming application gets the access pattern it needs without integrating against each underlying system.
i3X gives AI agents, low-code platforms, and analytics tools a stable, governed interface to factory data. The Intelligence Hub adds the security, role-based access control, and data modeling that production workloads require, so the same API that accelerates development also meets enterprise standards for trust and uptime.

i3X is an open, vendor-neutral standard for browsing, reading, writing, and subscribing to industrial data through a consistent, web-native API. It complements OPC UA, MQTT, and UNS rather than replacing them. Read on for adoption benefits: lower integration costs, less lock-in, and AI readiness.
At AI Manufacturing Day 2026 (sponsored by HighByte), Aron Semle and i3X working group members from CESMII and GE Appliances explain how i3X complements MQTT and OPC UA: a lightweight, opinionated factory API standardizing HTTP, JSON, four access methods, and data types.
In episode 14 of the Ctrl+Alt+Mfg podcast, CESMII CEO John Dyck and HighByte Chief Product Officer John Harrington argue that interoperability is a strategic business constraint. Custom integrations don't scale. CESMII's i3X initiative targets a 50% reduction in smart manufacturing cost and time.
In this video, HighByte CTO Aron Semle demonstrates how to connect i3X Explorer to HighByte Intelligence Hub to browse, read, and subscribe to data. He walks through the minimum setup, making it a practical guide for hands-on i3X experience. Note: this reflects an alpha i3X implementation.
